Honouring Heritage.

Enabling the Future.

With a history spanning more than a century, the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys required a careful balance between heritage and modernisation. Our role was to refine the organisation’s identity while developing a digital platform to support its evolving membership and operational needs.

The Challenge

As the professional body representing patent attorneys across the UK and internationally, the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys carries more than 130 years of history and institutional credibility.

The existing brand identity required careful refinement rather than wholesale reinvention. It was important that any visual evolution preserved the authority, heritage, and symbolism associated with the organisation, while introducing greater clarity, consistency, and flexibility across modern communications.

Alongside the brand work, the organisation needed a significantly more capable digital platform. The website had to evolve beyond a traditional information resource and become a central operational hub, integrating seamlessly with internal systems supporting membership management, renewals, events, professional resources, and ongoing member engagement.

Our Approach

Koded began by carefully evolving the organisation’s visual identity.

Working from the historic Three Graces symbol in the existing logo, we refined the mark by developing a new icon through negative space. This allowed the identity to retain its heritage while introducing a clearer and more contemporary visual expression. A complementary typographic system was introduced to modernise the overall brand while preserving its institutional character.

From this foundation, we developed a comprehensive set of brand guidelines to ensure consistency across all communications. The system extended across both digital and print — including the organisation’s journal, conference and exhibition graphics, event signage, and other official materials.

The website transformation formed a major component of the project. Designed and built from the ground up using bespoke proprietary code, the platform integrates directly with the organisation’s membership database, AgileBase, via secure API connections. This allows real-time synchronisation of member data, renewals, event registrations, and organisational content.

The result is a platform that functions as the digital centre of the organisation — supporting both its internal teams and its wider membership community.

The Outcome

The project delivered a refined visual identity and a powerful digital platform that reflect the organisation’s authority and heritage while supporting its modern operational needs.

The updated brand maintains the symbolism and credibility associated with CIPA’s history while introducing a clearer and more consistent visual language. Meanwhile, the new website has become the central hub for the organisation — enabling members to access resources, manage professional engagement, and interact with the institute through a seamless digital environment.

Koded continues to support CIPA as an ongoing digital partner, providing creative, digital, and technical expertise to the organisation and its wider team.

We don’t simply design brands.
We build the systems that allow them to grow.
